Psychiatric Consultations for Rural Communities
Dr. Peter Uhlmann, is available to communities in Canada and internationally who wish to upgrade their delivery of mental health and psychiatric services. Dr. Uhlmann has worked as a general clinical psychiatrist for over thirty years and most of that experience has been in isolated rural communities. He has worked in Africa, Asia, and Europe, as well as Canada and the USA. His specialty is psychiatry in rural communities.

Dr. Uhlmann usually is invited on contract to visit communities and initially assess their existing mental health programs and meet with the key service providers. He also involves consumers and patients.

After assessing the available resources he works with the service providers and funding bodies to improve and expand services in an integrated and efficient way. Often this requires reallocation of resources rather than looking for more funding. He is aware that many communities are constrained by fiscal concerns.

One example of his approach is to consider a "single entry system" where patients/clients enter through one portal in the mental health system rather than multiple referrals. Then the patient/client is "triaged" and referred to the appropriate treatment program. This is a type of one-stop-shopping which eliminates inefficiency in service delivery and keeps people from "falling through the cracks"

Dr. Uhlmann has consulted to various communities in British Columbia, the Yukon, and Ukraine in 1998-99. If your community is interested in a consultation with Dr. Uhlmann or just wishes to get further details, please contact him at:........petechi@prcn.org
